Dandenong too good for brave Nunawading

By Bryce Clayton (@BryceRojas)

Dandenong City has picked up its seventh win of the season with a 1-3 win over Nunawading City at Mahoneys Reserve on Saturday.

A brace to Ashley Cattermole followed by a goal to Senna Tokalic was enough for the away side to win, with John-Luc Silvestri the goal scorer for the home side.

It was the perfect start for Dandenong City after a mind-blowing mistake by Nunawading’s shot stopper just two minutes in.

A shocking clearance by goalkeeper Keegan Coulter found Cattermole all by himself with an open goal to aim for and he made no mistake, sending the ball into an empty net from 30 yards out.

It took until the 12th minute for the home side to create a chance, with David Morovic firing wide from just inside the area on an angle.

Dandenong thought it had doubled its lead in the 25th minute, but the offside flag denied Dario Matkovic after a great save by Coulter.

But Cattermole did double Dandenong’s lead five minutes later when a brilliant cutback by Daniel Buttic found him alone on the six-yard box.

Coulter was called into action again just four minutes later as he was forced into a save after some great work by Sean Sevill.

And Cattermole could have had a first half hat-trick if not for a great save by Coulter to deny the forward from scoring again.

Dandenong started the second half as it finished the first, with John Carroll firing wide from the six-yard box following a corner.

Matkovic thought he had scored again but was denied once again by the offside flag, with Seavill missing a header just two minutes later.

Despite Dandenong’s dominance it was Nunawading who pulled one back in the 54th minute, after Silvestri thumped it home from close range to get it back to 2-1.

Matkovic curled his free kick dangerously towards the top right corner but another great save by Coulter kept the home side in it.

Coulter pulled off yet another great save, denying Matkovic from open play and then making another amazing save from the resulting corner to keep the home side in it.

It was Matkovic once again with the chance in the 78th minute but he dragged his shot wide of the left post.

But it was all but over in the 81st minute when Tokalic pounced on an open goal and thumped the ball home to seal a solid away victory for Dandenong City.
