Great Goff earns Richmond come-from-behind win over Box Hill

By Chris Avnell (@pureavgas)

A wonder strike from Andrew Goff has given Richmond a come-from-behind victory over Box Hill United on Saturday night at Kevin Bartlett Reserve.

An early goal to Box Hill’s Travis Chalk-Hatton made life tough for the hosts, but two second half goals from Liam Flynn and Andrew Goff were enough to take the points.

The first half was end-to-end in a very open beginning to the match, with both teams forging chances from early on.

It was Box Hill who got the better of the early chances after 12 minutes, as a Box Hill corner was delivered to the far post where Alex Schroen managed to get a header off but it went past the wrong side of the bar for him.

Box Hill received the best chance to go ahead in the 17th minute, when an attacking player was scythed down in the box, with the referee not hesitating to point to the penalty spot.

Shaun Peterson was the man to take the penalty for his side, but the golden chance was wasted as his penalty was wide, hitting the right post and keeping the scores level.

Richmond had its first close chance as striker Tom Cahill managed to get a volleyed shot on goal, but his shot drifted wide of the top corner.

Box Hill kept applying pressure and it paid off in the 24th minute when big man Travis Chalk-Hatton volleyed home from inside the box after a Box Hill free kick.

Richmond had a chance to equalise within minutes when Cahill got away one-on-one with the Box Hill keeper, but defender Nikola Surdoski managed to get to him just in time, applying enough pressure to allow his keeper to get a block on Cahill’s shot.

With the first half coming to a close, despite both teams constantly attacking, it was Box Hill who looked the more threatening, but neither side could capitalise before the break.

Richmond begun the second half in a frantic pace, attacking from the get-go with Liam Flynn getting an early shot on goal as his bullet was parried away by the keeper for a corner.

Richmond found its equaliser from that corner when Flynn whipped the ball in deep, a curling ball that continued on its trajectory towards goal, before managing to get beat the sea of people and sail directly in from the corner.

The goal really ignited a fire in Richmond as their attacks came faster and looked more threatening. Chances fell to Josh Knight and Michael Catalano, but both missed.

Richmond’s Andrew Goff gave his side the go-ahead goal in the 58th minute with a strike as sweet as any.

The ball had come out of the Box Hill defensive area where it bounced along towards the half-way line, when Goff met the ball with a thunderous volley that, bulleting past the Box Hill keeper and into the net to put Richmond ahead.

As the rain started to teem down on the match, Box Hill went looking for an equaliser, but it never came, with the hosts running out 2-1 winners.
