Oakleigh salvages draw in night of madness against Northcote

By James Willoughby (@jwilloughby26)

Aron Wilford's 93rd-minute header has rescued a point for a 10-man Oakleigh side in an entertaining 2-2 draw with Northcote City on Monday night.

The healthy crowd at Jack Edwards Reserve roared with approval as Wilford dramatically levelled proceedings on a night where Miron Bleiberg's side looked like leaving with nothing.

Oakleigh goalkeeper John Honos had a night to forget, with his mistake leading to Aron Handakas' opener for Northcote, and although the impressive Ben Clarke quickly levelled, the shot-stopper was then sent off for bringing down Handakas in the penalty area.

James Kalifatidis netted the resultant spot-kick but Northcote paid the price for sitting back as Wilford clinched a draw at the death.

The equaliser continued Oakleigh's run of scoring late goals. The Cannons netted twice in the last five minutes to beat Avondale 2-1 earlier this month and Liam Boland scored a late brace to secure a 2-2 draw at Melbourne Knights last week.

There was little indication of the drama to follow in a dull first half, which saw Oakleigh's Dusan Bosnjak go closest to scoring.

Bosnjak's shot from a tight angle clipped the top of the bar in the 28th minute as both sides entered the break level.

Honos' first error brought the game to life in the 50th minute as he spilled a routine Jonathan Bounas ball, leaving an unmarked Handakas to score easily.

Oakleigh's response came six minutes later as Bosnjak stormed down the right before cutting back for Clarke to score.

Bosnjak went close to scoring one of his own when Northcote goalkeeper Christopher Theodoridis kept him out with a smart save.

But Honos' dismissal halted Oakleigh's momentum, as he clattered into Handakas, and Kalifatidis - following a lengthy delay as substitute goalkeeper Lajos Hun was introduced - held his nerve.

He tucked away the spot-kick into the bottom-right corner and it looked like being enough for Northcote, despite a series of late Oakleigh attacks.

They should have doubled their advantage in the 88th minute with a two-on-one counter-attack, but Kalifatidis blasted over, and Wilford had the last laugh, rising highest to nod in at the back post.

Oakleigh remain 12th with the draw, while Northcote moved above Dandenong Thunder and to 10th in the table.
