Brunswick falls to 10-man Kingston City

By James Manton

Brunswick City’s poor start to the season has continued after it failed to take advantage of an extra man, losing 1-3 to Kingston City on Saturday afternoon.

Despite Andrew Doig’s red card midway through the first half, Kingston held off a spirited, yet wayward, Brunswick, to record its fifth win of the season.

Damian Iaconis came close to opening the scoring for Kingston just minutes into the match, but his volley from inside the box was skied.

Not longer after, Stelios Konstantinidis was able to get his head onto a perfectly placed cross to put the ball past the outstretched hand of Alex Hards, giving Kingston the early lead.

Brunswick managed to equalise 10 minutes later thanks to a tame header from Fasile Aden as Kingston keeper Fraser Maclaren couldn’t stop the ball from crossing the line far enough for the linesman to signal the goal.

But the talking point of the game will be the red card to Kingston City’s Doig.

A hefty challenge from Anthony Ianchello on Benjamin Osei-Safo caused a scuffle after the Kingston forward took exception to the challenge.

After the referee consulted with his linesman, Doig was sent off, while Ianchello was given a yellow.

Despite the advantage, the visitors retook the lead with the last touch of the half.

Sean McIlroy got his head on the end of a free kick into the box, heading to the far post where James Karvelis successfully put the ball into the back of the net.

Brunswick came out in the second half with a renewed vigour, pushing hard for an equaliser, but it missed a number of clear chances.

Aden came closest to scoring his team’s second with a glancing header, but this time Maclaren was able to scoop the ball away from the goal line in time.

Chances dried up as the second-half progressed, until Gino Defeo put the result beyond doubt as his looping header got past Hards to give Kingston a 3-1 lead with just minutes to go.
