Fantastic four for GVS against Sunshine George Cross

By Daniel Campos (@francisfields)

Goulburn Valley Suns has continued its win streak with another big win against Sunshine George Cross in the first NPL 1 cross-conference round on Saturday afternoon at Chaplin Reserve.

The Suns put four past the hosts, adding to the 15 goals they had already scored in the last three games.

Sunshine was in trouble from the off, as the visitors stated their intentions to come away with a big win after just eleven minutes.

The goal came courtesy of some good combination play on the left wing, which was smartly finished by Vani Shamoon.

Only minutes later Craig Carley managed to squeeze himself in between defenders on a bouncing long ball to find himself one-on-one with goalkeeper Robert Santillil and smartly lobbed the ball over the advancing Santilli, only for his shot to go wide.

Sunshine midfielder Slaven Vranesevic tried to settle his side and start to hold possession, but he found it difficult thanks to a stubborn and well organised GVS defence.

The visitors kept coming, but Santilli was impressive in the hosts’ goals, cutting out a pair of potentially dangerous crosses by Fahed Alghazaly.

It took a quick fast break on the left by Adamson Ajayi to liven up Sunshine George Cross’ only attacking hope in the first half, but it came to nothing, and the sides went into the half 0-1.

Immediately after the restart, a defensive lapse by the home side enabled Goulburn Valley’s Craig Carley to take full advantage with a clinical poacher’s finish to extend the visitors’ lead to 0-2.

On the hour mark the Suns grabbed a third in fortuitous fashion; a mistimed clearance caught Santilli completely by surprise, with the own goal making the scoreline 0-3.

The final ten minutes of the match saw Goulburn Valley keep attacking through the commanding presence of Adam Scott on the right wing, with his blistering speed and quick feet.

Sunshine George Cross kept at it despite being three goals down, with Vranesevic, Matthew Oghanna and Bozidar Lojanica all testing goalkeeper Phillip Petrovski with solid long range efforts.

It was however too little, too late.

With only eight minutes before the full time whistle, Adam Scott made sure he was rewarded for his exploits with a goal on 82 minutes.

His accurate shot breezed past Robert Santilli and a hapless Georgies’ defence to make it 4-0, and keep his side’s perfect start intact.
