Suns shine to make it three on the trot

Goulburn Valley Suns has continued its perfect start to the season, defeating NPL 1 East rivals Springvale White Eagles 2-0 at John McEwan Reserve on Saturday night.

An early goal in the fourth minute by Craig Carley gave the Suns a dream start, before the second came just three minutes before full time courtesy of substitute Shaun Kane.

Spurred on by having already accrued six points from a possible six, the Suns came out of the blocks firing.

It took just four minutes for the NPL 1 East’s leading goalscorer Craig Carley to add to his tally.

Carley made his mark on the game with an expert poachers’ finish to give his side the lead, and continue his form.

The Suns almost doubled their lead towards the end of the first half through Adam Scott.

His effort from the wing appeared to be a cross, before swerving in the air and forcing Springvale goalkeeper Nebojsa Vujic to tip it onto the bar and over for a corner.

The hosts went into the side with a goal up, before coming out firing.

Shortly after the restart, Goulburn almost turned its domination into a second but Vujic was equal to the task, making a good save at his near post.

Springvale was on the back foot for most of the match, having to deal with an energetic GVS.

The hosts’ next chance came through a Sean Ellis free kick, only for Vujic to again prove up to the task, making a good save.

Goulburn Valley doubled its lead with three minutes to go of regulation time.

Shaun Kane found himself with room just outside the 18-yard-box, and launched a low strike that nestled past Vujic and into the far side netting.

The second goal sealed the three points for the hosts, and the win means Goulburn Valley Suns has already accumulated more wins in three games than it did in the whole of 2014.
