Super Suns put seven past Murray United

By Matt McNamara

Goulburn Valley Suns has thrashed newcomers Murray United in a one-way affair in Shepparton on Saturday evening.

A hat-trick from Sean Ellis, a brace from Craig Carley, and goals from Shaun Kane and Fahed Alghazaly helped secure the points for the home side. Zac Walker scored a late consolation goal for the visitors.

Whilst the scoreline may reflect one-way traffic, the opening period saw Murray United with two great chances to take an early lead.

Some great build up play out wide by Walker saw Kade Rixon with only the keeper to beat but he couldn’t manage to guide the ball into the net.

Rixon was in the thick of things early, and after he easily dazzled past Jordan Montagner, was unlucky to see his strike go agonizingly wide.

The warning signs were there early for the home side with Suns goalkeeper Philip Petrovski making a remarkable save to deny Adam Waters.

But from there on, the Suns took control.

Alghazaly rose highest to nod in Adam Scott’s corner just after the hour mark, before the home side doubled their lead shortly after, through man-of-the-match Sean Ellis.

Moments later it was 3-0 when some magical work out wide by Craig Carley saw his cross nodded in by an unmarked Shaun Kane at the back post.

With half time approaching, the Suns scored again.  Ellis’ free kick taking a wicked deflection on the way to goal, leaving Josh Fluss stranded.

Any thoughts of a comeback were put to bed in the 67th minute when Carley scored for the home side, cheekily nutmegging his opponent on the way to goal before hammering home.

Murray United pulled one back shortly after with Zac Walker rounding Petrovski in the Suns’ goal but the Suns hit back inside 45 seconds when Ellis secured his hat trick.

Carley got on the scoresheet once again in injury time to seal the Suns’ 7-1 victory over their country neighbours.
