De Vries shines on world stage

Bentleigh Greens winger Ryan De Vries is just two matches away from a spot in the FIFA Club World Cup final in Morocco.

De Vries was a key member of the Auckland City side which defeated home side Moghreb Tetouan on penalties in Morocco overnight, after both sides were inseparable with scores locked at 0-0.

The much-travelled South African-born forward has experienced varying standards of football, but believes the FIFA Club World Cup is on another level altogether.

"Playing in Australia was in a good league, a good standard," De Vries said.

"But it's just a completely different level up here, playing against these pro teams.

"It's the first time I've played in front of 35,000 people. It's quite amazing."

De Vries spent the second half of the 2014 NPL season with Bentleigh after completing a stint in the New Zealand's ASB Premiership with Waitakere United.

Upon his arrival at Kingston Heath, the Greens were sitting in mid-table, but it had just sealed its spot in the FFA Cup Round of 32.

Bentleigh ended up finishing fourth overall, and went on an FFA Cup run that took them to the semi finals, sealing its spot in Australian football folklore.

"Definitely the FFA Cup was my favourite part of the last year with Bentleigh," he said.

"Beating Blacktown, then coming back to Sydney Olympic and scoring the winner was good."

His connection with Bentleigh remains strong, with his former team mates keeping a close eye on how his Auckland City side has been travelling over the course of the ASB Premiership season, and the FIFA World Club Championship.

"There's been a few Facebook messages," he said.

"'Well done, keep going, we're watching', so it's pretty good to see they're still supporting us."

For those who tuned into the game in Morocco, they would have seen De Vries weave his magic against the hosts, almost winning putting the Kiwis ahead in regulation time.

He led a counter attack which found team mate Emiliano Tade, only for the Argentinian forward to spray it wide.

De Vries also had the best chance of the second half, but he could only hit the side netting.

He turned creator again in extra time, setting up Spanish team mate Angel Berlinga, but his effort went wide and sent the match to the dreaded penalty shootout.

"There wasn't one point where I thought we didn't have a chance of winning it," De Vries said.

"Throughout the whole game, it was just a matter of time of when it was going to happen.

"Lucky for us, we went through on penalties."

De Vries and Auckland City will face African Champions League winners ES Setif from Algeria in the quarter final on Sunday.

Should they win that, they'll face Argentinian side San Lorenzo in the semi final.

Beyond that contest, and it's either Cruz Azul, Western Sydney Wanderers, or Real Madrid in the showpiece event of club football.
