Knights finish season on high

By Mark Gojszyk (@hahahamark)

Melbourne Knights has finished its season on a high, defeating Bentleigh Greens 2-0 in front of delighted home fans on Friday night.

First-half goals to Daniel Visevic and Joey Monek were enough to seal the result, despite Bentleigh’s dominance throughout periods of the contest.

The visitors would be wondering what else they had to do to score a goal, missing a catalogue of chances, including a spot kick by Tom Matthews.

Both teams started the contest comfortably in possession, knocking the ball around but not opening up the opposition.

Liam McCormick had the first shot in anger from midfield, but the ball sailed safely high and wide.

A pattern emerged with Bentleigh trying to play its wingers in behind the defence, forcing the hosts deeper in their own half.

The tactic almost worked, with an Andre McNamara cutback not dealt with by the Knights’ defence, but Wayne Wallace skied his shot from close range.

De Vries was the next teammate to play Wallace through on goal, but the captain again missed a very gettable shot.

A rare Knights foray forward in the 30th minute yielded immediate results, when the Greens failed to clear a corner and Stipo Andrijasevic was taken down in the box.

Visevic stepped up to the spot, and while Alistair Bray blocked the penalty, the ball conveniently landed back at the midfielder’s feet to blast home.

The home side was still looking shaky at the back, with the visitors pouncing on loose clearances.

However, profligacy continued to dog Bentleigh, with Ryan De Vries the next player to spurn a clear opportunity at goal.

The visitors were made to pay as Marijan Cvitkovic skipped into the box, fended off a couple of defenders and played in a wicked cross from the byline, which found Monek open at the back post to volley home.

The second half was more low-key, but Bentleigh fashioned the first chance from a corner, with Jack Webster’s header cleared by a defender on the back post.

De Vries looked constantly dangerous, making dashing runs into the box, but struggled to get his shots on target.

His persistence paid off in the 74th minute, when he was adjudged to have been dragged down in the box by Milan Batur.

Matthews opted for power for his penalty kick, but the strike hit the upright and bounced away to safety.

That would be the final noteworthy action of the contest, with the Knights holding on for a satisfying win, while Bentleigh would be wondering what could have been.

Knights defender Batur was satisfied with the conclusion to his side’s season.

“It’s always good to win, I think all the boys are pretty happy with the result,” Batur said.

“It’s good to beat the third-best team or so this year in Victoria.”

While the Dockerty Cup winners can now look forward to a well-earned break, Bentleigh will turn its attention to its next FFA Cup fixture, to be played against Sydney Olympic in Leichardt on Tuesday night.
