Brunswick upsets rivals Moreland

Baggio Yousif's stoppage time goal earned Brunswick City a 3-2 win in a thrilling contest at Dunstan Reserve.

The result does little for either side on the NPL1 standings, as Brunswick remain bottom while Moreland sit comfortably in mid-table.

Brunswick went 2-0 ahead through Matthew Tancevski and Amara Kromah against the run of play, before Moreland struck back in the second half.

James Papadimitriou’s brace set up a grandstand finish, before Yousif won it at the death.

In blustery conditions, the class of Moreland shone through early as it held onto possession far better than the hosts, who resorted to counter-attacking down the flanks through Sam Mazzolini and former Bendigo man, Kromah.

Mason Interlandi has been a revelation in NPL1 this season, and he underlined his credentials no less than three times in the first 15 minutes as Nick Symeoy and Papadimitriou found openings inside the penalty area.

A defensive mix up saw the hosts open the scoring on the counter, as Tancevski was left all alone and Nikola Kostadinovski could only parry his initial strike, before he slotted home at the second time of asking.

Seven minutes later it was 2-0, as Moreland's inside-left channel was being horribly exposed.

Kromah was played through, and with the back-four stagnant, the winger blasted home which sent the home crowd into rapturous applause.

The beginning of the second period was riddled with scrappy play and loose turnovers, before Papadimitriou struck on 61 minutes to give the Zebras hope.

Brothers Simon and Nick Symeoy combined, as the latter's neat header found the attacker unmarked and he struck a low volley across Interlandi.

Kalambokis was brought on with ten minutes remaining, as Moreland switched to a back three and effectively threw caution to the wind.

It paid dividends on 86 minutes, as the Papadimitriou’s mis-hit cross looped in over the helpless Interlandi.

With Moreland looking the far more likely of the two sides to snatch a winner, they were left far too exposed as an innocuous punt upfield found Yousif, who got goal-side of the defence to guide his game-winning strike past Kostadinovski.

The drama was not over there, however, as the younger of the two Symeoy's, Nick, let fly with a fierce drive from all of 30 yards but Interlandi was equal to it yet again.

Brunswick City coach Joe De Martino was expectedly pleased with the performance and beating a local rival.

"I'm very happy with the boys and the overall performance, winners are grinners!” De Martino said.

"We stuck to our guns and knew we needed this result. This is a local derby, and to win was a big target for us.”

Moreland Zebras coach Danny Gnjidic was disappointed with the result but did not fault his troops.

"I'd have to be super critical to find something negative from today. In terms of applications and attitude, I can't fault my players," Gnjidic said.

"I think we had enough chances to win the game, maybe even enough to win two games.”
