Dandy City stroll to victory

By Sean Ellicott (@SeanEllicott)

Dandenong City has notched up its third consecutive victory with a 3-0 win over local rivals Kingston City on Monday night at The Grange Reserve.

Shaun Filipovic put the visitors up just before the half hour mark with Sean Seavill and Karim El Hilali rounding out the result late in the contest.

The occasion also marked the sixth successive game Ivan Duzel's side has finished undefeated as Kingston were left ruing early missed opportunities.

Despite the scoreline, the hosts began the night on the front foot.

The majority of the opening 15 minutes belonged largely to Kingston as Nick Tolios' side created a number of chances.

Forward Max Etheridge had the best of which as his exquisite touch on the volley set him up for a one-on-one with Dandenong keeper Marko Stevanja, only for his resulting effort to pass the wrong side of the upright.

Stelios Konstandinidis was also played in via a turnover at the back in a promising position, but his shot nevertheless failed to trouble Stevanja.

Debutant goalkeeper Nicholas Woolward however created a nervous moment at the other end, earning a yellow card as he collided Filipovic just outside the penalty area.

Despite pulling off a decent save moments later, the keeper could do nothing as Filipovic buried his side's first.

Released down the right wing Danijel Buhic, squared up Filipovic directly in front of goal, finishing his effort on the first touch.

The pair then combined shortly after in yet another elegant build up with the resulting effort this time blazed over from the edge of the penalty area.

Living up to its reputation as a local derby, the contest turned fiery in the latter stages of the first half.

Challenges became more frequent, sparking both sides into life - Kingston lifting its intensity as it noticeably moved the ball with urgency.

The visitors however ran away with the game as the young Dandenong outfit dominated large patches of the second interval.

Woolward provided Dario Matkovic with a chance as his wayward pass found the midfielder's feet inside the penalty area, but was unable to punish the keeper for his error, pulling his snap shot wide.

In a half devoid of highlights for the hosts, Kingston had appeals for a penalty turned down after Konstandinidis drew some contact inside the box, while Velibor Mitrovic denied an equaliser by the assistant referee's raised flag.

With a quarter of an hour to play, Sean Seavill bagged his side's second of the night.

Stevanja's free kick, from Mitovic's offside, met the head of Filipovic who flicked on to Seavill.

The number ten then took his effort in superb fashion, lobbing Woolward on the volley from well outside the penalty area, catching the keeper in no-mans-land and handing Dandenong a 2-0 lead.

Less than five minutes later and the visitors had their third.

Strolling through Kingston's defence, Matkovic's ball played through El Hilali, with the forward tucking his effort into the back of the net.

A dejected Kingston battled on admirably but the contest belonged to Dandenong who could even have extended the scoreline before the full time whistle.

The result saw Dandenong leap-frog Kingston into ninth position with coach Ivan Duzel expressing his delight at full time.

"This is the sixth week that we have gone undefeated… [we were] a little bit more tactical and there were some fine young boys who tonight came to actually to play football,” Duzel said.

"At the end of the day we scored three goals, we created a couple chances and they created a couple.

"I believe over the ninety minutes we were the better side and we deserved to win. No question"

Despite missing a few opportunities Kingston City coach Nick Tolios touted Dandenong as the better side.

"If we put our chances away early the game it would have been different but we are still conceding goals from our own errors but credit to Dandenong City,” Tolios said.

"They were the better side in the end and whether a three-goal better side, probably not, credit to them, give them three points.”
