Green Gully stuns Hume City

By Matthew McNamara

Green Gully has won its first game under new coach Bob Stojcevski with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Hume City at Broadmeadows Valley Park on Sunday.

After going into the break at 0-0, a stunning strike from Mathew Sanders was quickly followed by a close-range drive from Jason Hayne, before an unfortunate own goal from Hume City centre-back Petar Franjic saw the visitors take all three points for the first time in three matches.

The opening period was somewhat of an arm wrestle with both sides looking for the ascendancy but struggling to create clear-cut opportunities.

Johnny Buceto was guilty of spurning a glorious chance after he was slipped in by Kliment Taseski, but the Melbourne Victory Youth star saw his strike slip agonisingly wide.

Hume appeared to gain the upper hand in the final stages of the opening period.  Aaron Turner saw his strike sail over the bar before Baki Efe hit a stunning volley which Kieran Gonzalez held well.

Moments before halftime, Hume was unfortunate not to head into the dressing rooms 1-0 up after Anthony Proia’s walloping strike smashed against the cross bar.

Green Gully asserted itself after the break, with a wonderful strike from Sanders giving his side the lead.

Hume was often its own worst enemy, as it failed to clear its lines just prior to Sanders receiving the ball on the edge of the area before his neat turn and thunderous strike.

With just under 10 minutes remaining, Gully delivered a huge blow as substitute Hayne collected a rebound off Hume City keeper’ Chris Oldfield and drove home his strike into the bottom corner.

With only a few minutes of injury time remaining, Hume City gifted Gully its final goal after a defensive howler saw Franjic loop the ball past the hapless Oldfield.

Super-sub Hayne was pleased with his side’s efforts.

“Obviously we have come off a few tough defeats in the past few weeks so I’m estactic with the result,” Hayne said.

“One of the main positives today was that we kept a clean sheet for once.”

Hume City coach Louie Acevski offered few words after his side’s disappointing performance.

“To be honest, we were beaten by a better team on the day.  Full credit to Green Gully for their performance today,” Acevski said.
