Richmond ends tough week on a high

By Chris Hearn (@_ChrisHearn)

Richmond has dusted itself off after a turbulent week to record its second victory of the campaign away to FC Bendigo on Saturday night, winning 4-1.

Grant Brebner resigned from the position of head coach on Thursday and Rick Mensick was named caretaker in his place - his appointment providing swift dividends.

Tom Cahill was in blistering form for the visitors, scoring two and creating one for Hamlet Armenian as well as being instrumental in an own goal for Bendigo defender Josh Romein.

In a cagey opening, Bendigo looked to catch Richmond out with long diagonal passes, but Mensick's side woke up to this and pressed the ball carrier at every opportunity.

They were rewarded on 18 minutes, as Tom Cahill dispatched debutant Ryan Opperman's inch-perfect cross from six yards.

Bendigo looked shell-shocked after going behind, narrowly avoiding a second goal thanks to great goalkeeping by Sebastian Mattei.

The home side recovered and grew into the game, forcing Richmond back with intelligent pressing.
Amarah Kromah went close after a Viktor Rodriguez cross, but the hosts didn't have to wait much longer.

In a succession of three corners, Rodriguez's flighted delivery evaded everyone but Trent Waterson at the far post.

The Bendigo winger swivelled and fired home an unstoppable strike into the top corner with 13 minutes to play in the first half.

Bendigo went close again through central defender Romein, but his header was tipped over by Edward Chadwick.

The home side would be left to rue that missed chance as Richmond went ahead in first-half stoppage time.

Cahill was a fearsome attacking presence for the visitors, and his guile created the go-ahead goal for Armenian.

Cahill turned brilliantly on the edge of the area and his strike was parried by Mattei at full stretch, leaving Armenian with an empty net to pass into.

The visitors started the second half far stronger, with Bendigo looking to strike on the counter which made for a stalemate.

A moment of magic was needed, and unsurprisingly, Cahill was the man who provided it, peeling off his marker to fire his left-footed strike across Mattei.

Bendigo's humiliation was complete with 10 minutes to play, as Cahill's low cross was turned in by Romein.

Richmond now moves to eighth position ahead of Dandenong City, which takes on Bulleen on Monday, while this result leaves Bendigo at the bottom of the table after Brunswick's win at Whittlesea on Friday night.

Mensick lauded his attacking players for their contribution.

"Our front four were pretty dynamic, very, very potent,” Mensick said.

"Tonight's a starting point but we've got a long way to go.”

"We know that's not the finished product, but we'll get better."

FC Bendigo was unavailable for comment.
