Ranges to honour war heroes

Whittlesea Ranges will work with Epping RSL this ANZAC Day to mark the occasion with a flag raising ceremony at its match against Brunswick City, in one of three NPL fixtures being played this Friday night.

The Ranges hosts Brunswick City in the NPL 1 at Epping Stadium, while Port Melbourne hosts Heidelberg at JL Murphy Reserve, and Bentleigh Greens plays Dandenong Thunder at Kingston Heath in the NPL.

“It’s all about respecting our war heroes,” Whittlesea Ranges administrator Adam Cuschieri said.

“The generation that protected our freedom and our democracy; it’s about giving thanks to them and this is our way of doing it.”

The club has engaged the Epping RSL to hold a flag raising ceremony on the evening, with a minute’s silence and a bugler to play the last post, commemorating the sacrifices Australia’s veterans have made.

Some RSL members have also been invited to come along to a pre-match function, giving them a chance to mix with members of Whittlesea’s football family.

Cuschieri said Whittlesea had formed a close affiliation with the RSL.

“We want to not only engage their members, but also to give our children an opportunity to understand what this day is all about,” he said.

Whittlesea currently sits in 10th spot on the ladder, while opponent Brunswick City is languishing in last place.

Cuschieri said he hoped the crowd would witness a game to remember on Friday night.

“As far as the game itself, we’re hoping all the players will be playing with a lot of heart and soul, as our soldiers did,” he said.

“But also with respect, honour and integrity - all the attributes that mark the ANZAC spirit.”

The game kicks off 8.30pm at Epping Stadium, while the pre-match function begins at 7.30pm.
