Landmark night for football in Bendigo

By Tim McGlone

Elite football is set to hit Bendigo for the first time in the town’s history this weekend when FC Bendigo takes on Moreland Zebras on Saturday night at the Tom Flood Sports Centre.

In what is set to be a historic night, Bendigo’s young stars will kick off proceedings at 5pm, in the U20s clash, before the senior side takes to the field at 7pm.

Despite two close losses to open the season, coach Steve Martin's squad has shown some impressive signs in the first two rounds, and will be looking to score a win in its first game in front of home fans.

FC Bendigo operations manager Brock Rogers said the club hoped for a good turnout on Saturday night.

“We’ve put the work in over the last seven or eight weeks in getting a side up and running," Rogers said.

“It will be great to see the boys run out on Saturday night, and hopefully, we can get a good crowd there supporting them”.

A feature of the Bendigo side that will take on Moreland is the level of home grown talent in the squad, including captain and key midfielder Trent Waterson.

Bendigo resident and Minister for Sport Damian Drum said it was huge for the future of the football in Bendigo to have a side competing with Victoria’s elite.

“This weekend will be huge for sport in Bendigo with FC Bendigo making its home debut at Tom Flood Sports Centre," Mr Drum said.

“Not only will it be a chance for all Bendigo sports fans to see elite soccer, the homegrown talent on show in the team will inspire young children to get involved in sport, and in turn build a more active Victoria.”

Key players for the squad include Waterson, Matt Breeze and striker George Slefendorfas. Right-back Ryan Davidson has also impressed over the opening two games.
