Dandenong City prevails in thriller

A rampant second half from Dandenong City saw it overrun Brunswick City as Dario Matkovic scored in the dying stages to win 4-3.

Brunswick got off to an early lead after a penalty from a handball in the opening two minutes. Nicholas Terezakis converted the spot-kick, which bounced in from the left post.

Dandenong leveled the score through big man Damien Miskulin after 15 minutes. Finding himself on the receiving end of a free-kick from the left side, he fired a low shot past Mason Interlandi and into the back of the net.

Brunswick hit the lead for the second time after Dimitri Vithoulkas latched on to a long ball in the 34th minute. He eased the ball past Dennis Martin to finish an effective counter-attack.

Dandenong hit back once more in the 57th minute after substitute Goran Juzeljic finished off some brilliant work down the right side with a back-post tap in. The goal was a catalyst for a change in momentum as the away side started to gain the upper hand.

Dandenong hit the lead for the first time in the 65th minute after Keegan Ziada hit a superb shot from just outside the box that flashed just inside the near post.

Brunswick didn’t give up easily however, and equalised in brilliant fashion after 74 minutes as a long-range strike from Denis Sadik flew in off the inside of the post, leaving the ‘keeper with no chance.

In the dying stages of the game, Dandenong found the vital goal to edge it ahead as Matkovic ran onto Juzeljic’s through ball, drilling a shot past Interlandi for what proved to be the winner in a seven-goal thriller.

Dandenong coach Ivan Duzel was happy with the way in which his team responded in the second half.

“I told the boys to be patient...the chances are going to come and that’s what happened,” Duzel said.

Duzel was also very high in his praise of youngster Keegan Ziada.

“The kid is excellent...at 25 years old he’s a quality boy to come into our league. He gave everything today,” he said.

While happy with his team’s result, he was also very impressed by Brunswick’s efforts.

“It’s a young team...I don’t think they could give a better performance than they did today, they played to the limit,” he said.

The Brunswick City camp was unavailable for comment.
