Hume hotshots halt Heidelberg

By Matthew Conversano

Hume City prevailed 2-0 winners on Sunday evening as they defeated Heidelberg in a tight contest at Olympic Park.

An action packed second half of football saw goals from Marcus Shroen and Theo Markelis which was enough to secure the three points for the visitors.

In a first half bereft of goalmouth action, both sides struggled to implement their respective styles of football on the match.

The first and best chance of the half came just after 17 minutes as the ever dangerous Heidelberg strike pairing of Kaine Sheppard and Daniel Heffernan linked up well, with the latter latching onto a cross and heading it toward goal.

However the header was at an ideal height for Hume custodian Chris Oldfield who saved comfortably.

5 minutes later, Hume conjured up a reply in the form of a Daniel Clark cross which found Shroen streaming into the box.

However his lunging attempt at a volley flew just over the bar.

With flared tempers and rash challenges aplenty, the first half was far from a testament to free flowing football.

The second half opened more lively than the first with Heidelberg seemingly pulling themselves in front in the first three minutes following the restart.

Sheppard took the ball down well with his chest and finished emphatically into the bottom corner, however the referee’s assistant deemed him to be offside. Cue a disgruntled groan from the Heidelberg faithful.

The game found its first goal on the 55th minute mark after Shroen released a terrific strike from 20 yards that curled away from Heidelberg custodian Griffin McMaster and into the top left corner.

Hume put the game to bed 12 minutes later with Shroen again heavily involved in the attack as his deflected strike fell to Markelis who had time and space in the box to slot home Hume’s second of the evening.

Despite a few half chances as the evening wore on, Heidelberg failed to convert these into goals as Hume made the trip back home with a clean sheet.
