GUALE, HONIARA GO THROUGH TO SEMIS

The race for the second slot in Pool A is between Western Province and Choiseul. Western Province squandered their opportunity to move up in the ladder by losing to a Temotu side which is already out of contention. Temotu capitalised on a disorganised start on the part of Westerners to put themselves 3 – 0 ahead in the first half. The loss means that Western remain at 4 points behind Temotu who have 6 and Choiseul with 7. West will need to beat Choiseul by a minimum of 5 – 0 to qualify for the second round.

In Pool B Honiara confirmed their place in the semi-finals with a 1 – 0 win over Makira Ulawa putting them on top with 10 points. Unfortunately for Honiara, star flanker Jack Wetney was red carded in the second half and cannot take part in their semi nor their finals should they go as far. Makira played excellently well but Honiara had the conditioning edge and were able to overcome the Real Kakamora side.

The race for the second spot in Pool B is still open, at least on paper. Malaita are premier contenders and look likely to grab this spot if they win against Rennell Bellona this afternoon. Malaita need only a draw to go through but will want to score more goals for the sake of their fans. Rennell Bellona may fancy themselves a shot at going through if they can overcome the mighty Malaitans in their encounter but they will need an almighty goal margin to do so. Makira will also up the pressure on Malaita when they take on Isabel at 3:0opm. They have an outside chance of going through if Rennell Bellona can cause an upset and they win against Isabel with a good goal margin.

The semi finals are scheduled for Wednesday and in what will be a day of highly competitive football as the teams fight for seats in the grand final. The grand final itself is booked for Saturday but this may change.
