2015 Pacific Games, Port Moresby, PAPUA NEW GUINEA
4 - 18th July 2015
One of the smallest countries and probably with the smallest contingent at the XV Pacific Games is over the moon after winning its first gold medal at the XV Pacific Games in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.
“We are ecstatic, just ecstatic, blew our minds, just awesome,” said Jacqueline Grandy Chef De Mission for Norfolk Island after Douglas Creek won their first gold in pistol shooting.
“We had high hopes and it was well deserved.
Creek is part of the two men Team Norfolk Island shooting team in a team of just 18 to these games.
Norfolk now has 1 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze all from shooting.
Creek won gold shooting with his left hand after an accident forced him to switch from his right to left.
Grandy is hoping the gold medal win will really inspire the rest of the contingent.
And she hopes their fairy –tale run will also see them adding more medals from athletics, golf and lawn bowls.
“Hopefully when our lawn bowlers, golfers and we’ve got one in athletics come over they’ll add to the tally with fingers crossed we’re all hoping they’re all good at their sport.”
Grandy says the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in 2018 will be the major focus of after Port Moresby.
Her comments about the Pacific Games, “I think with what they’ve done they are doing a terrific job, you can’t complain you’ve got a bed somewhere to sleep and its secure, we all feel safe. Everyone we’ve come across is actually friendly, beautiful people.”
