STOP HIV in Palau

Twelve coaches out of the Palau National Olympic Committee, including Secretary General, Baklai Temengil were part of the Community Coach Workshop where only the STOP HIV components were delivered.  This 3-day workshop is intended to compliment a previous workshop specifically focused on the principles of coaching.  The workshop was conducted from the 12th-14th March, 2012 at the Palau Community College.  OSEP North Pacific Facilitator, Jubilee Kuartei delivered the workshop with STOP HIV Program Manager/ Facilitator, Margaret Eastgate.

Day 1 of the workshop was a refresher for the coaches, as they re-discovered the role of being a coach and in this case a STOP HIV Community Coach.  The STOP HIV component included interactive sessions on HIV myths and misconceptions in the community; sports as a tool to address HIV; defining self-esteem and life skills; learning life skills through games the use of rules; gender and sex and the transmission modes and prevention methods of sexually transmitted infections and HIV. These topics were well received and generated healthy discussion around the derogatory language used in discussing sexual activities and the cultural taboos associated with STIs.

Day 2 focused on Voluntary Confidential Counselling and Testing; living with HIV; prevention on and off the filed and the core skills of being a STOP HIV Community Coach.  Whilst some participants created their own games, others developed their session plans around existing movement games, conducted by the Lead Facilitator from Day 1.  The STOP HIV games were scheduled into warm-ups and cool-downs on coaching sessions, for later assessment.

Day 3 saw each participant deliver a STOP HIV game utilizing the rest of the group as athletes.  The sessions were assessed by the on-site Facilitators.  Following each delivery, the Facilitators provided feedback to the participant following the CREED Model on how the session went.  The 'sandwich method' of providing feedback was used.  All of the coaches were very impressive on their first attempt at utilizing games as the platform for the HIV education.

The workshop culminated with the development of a 3-month Action Plan for Palau.  OSEP North Pacific Facilitator, Jubilee Kuartei will work with the participants and provide feedback on the delivery of their STOP HIV sessions ahead of the June/July scheduled assessments.
