Vanuatu strikes first in football

VANUATU has set the country alight with its first victory on the opening day of the football competition at the Van2017 Pacific Mini Games.

Two days before the official opening ceremony to launch the Games, Vanuatu faced off against New Caledonia before the football mad home crowd at 3pm on Saturday afternoon.

The highly skilled Vanuatu team took the early advantage when striker Alex Saniel scored in the 33rd minute.

The New Caledonians responded and levelled the score early in the second half and with the crowd screaming for the home side, forward Azariah Soroman set the crowd alight into a frenzy when he blasted the ball into the net just before full-time.

With Vanuatu winning 2-1 the excited crowd poured from the stadium and into the dtreets of the capital of Port Vila.

Vanuatu received three points for their first victory.

In other results, Fiji defeated Tuvalu 8-0 and Solomon Islands scored a win over Tonga 3-0.
