TASANOC Hosts Development Planning Workshop for National Federations
Attendees learned about the importance of planning to create athlete success at high performance sport competitions. With the London 2012 Summer Olympics set to take place in July next year, many National Sport Federations have athletes who are in the qualification process. By having a plan in place, says Hiko Fungavaka, TASANOC’s Sport Development Officer, these athletes have greater chance of qualifying.
‘If the Federations can give TASANOC their plan, we can find ways to support them – funding for athletes, training for coaches, etc. There are a lot of opportunities out there that Tonga misses because we didn’t have a plan or communicate with our partners.’
The workshop also trained representatives in basic admin management tools such as Microsoft Office programs and the Commonwealth Games Federation’s online games management system, Zeus. Representatives from the Ministry of Training, Education, Youth and Sports were on hand to speak about their role in developing sport in Tonga and their vision for the future.
This workshop was the first step in developing a long-term training pathway for the National Sport Federations of Tonga. Through a partnership with the Oceania Sport Education Program (OSEP), TASANOC hopes to offer more training courses for her members in 2012 to strengthen sports programs in the Kingdom.
