TASA completed first meeting with NF’s for NC2011

The Tonga Association of Sports (TASA) held its first meeting with potential National Federations (NF’s)/sports for the upcoming Pacific Games (NC2011) yesterday, 31st January at the TASA office at Haveluloto. The meeting was conducted by Secretary General, Takitoa Taumoepeau, NC2011 Chef de Mission ‘Amanaki Fakakovikaetau and TASA SDO Hiko Fungavaka.

Of the potential 19 sports programs, 18 representatives of NF’s turned out which was very encouraging in terms of coordinating information and briefing on matters relating to the Games.

There were representatives from Athletics, Beach Volleyball, Football, Golf, Weightlifting, Swimming, Rugby 7’s, Tennis, Volleyball, Badminton, Boxing, Cricket, Surfing, Taekwondo, and Archery. Apology was Triathlon and table Tennis.

According to Takitoa, the main objective of the meeting was to inform the potential NF’s/sports of various matters including deadlines that each sports must adhere in order to take part. Further, there was also the issue of finance which 1/3 of the cost has to be borne by each participating sports. He added, “that at this point of time, we haven’t heard from His Majesty’s Government but a courtesy letter has been sent to the new Minister of Sport and TASA will follow it up again”.

In addition, Takitoa also reminded the delegates that a penalty of USD1,000 for each sport who entered but did not participate in the Games. For that, the meeting was reminded that a deadline for each NF’s/sport to pay this as a security by 31st March, 2011.

There was also a reminder from the panel that because the Game is “Smoke free” it is strongly recommended that athletes and officials should abide this ruling which the Executive Committee has endorsed.

The first requirement now is for each sport to decide on their “numerical entries” which is to be sent before the 27th February, 2011. Late entries will not be accepted and therefore means that particular sports/NF’s will not take part in the Games. The meeting agreed that a provisional deadline for TASA is 21st February, 2011 which gives some room for the office to follow up with any NF’s/sports before the actual Organizing Committee deadline.
