The Lifetime Achievement Award presented to Fiji's Dr Robin Mitchell (pictured) was the highlight of the inaugural Pacific Sports Awards, which were presented at the Pacific Games Council's 2009 General Assembly in Rarotonga.
Dr Mitchell has a long and illustrious history in the service of Sport in the Pacific, most notably as the IOC Member in Fiji since 1994, the current President of Oceania National Olympic Committees and Chairman of the Oceania Regional Anti-Doping Organisation, the former President of Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee, Chairman of the 2003 South Pacific Games in Suva, former Fiji National Team Hockey Coach, and former South Pacific Games medallist in both Athletics (bronze) and Hockey (gold).
The Pacific Sports Awards also recognised winners in seven other categories for their performances between 1 July 2008 and 30 June 2009. A seven-member judging panel was constituted from amongst the Council's membership and their votes revealed the following winners:

COACH of the Year - JERRY WALLWORK (WEIGHTLIFTING, SAMOA)
TECHNICAL OFFICIAL of the Year - MOAPE VU RAVUDOLE (NETBALL, FIJI)
JUINOR ATHLETE of the Year - LARA GRANGEON (SWIMMING, NEW CALEDONIA)
FEMALE ATHLETE of the Year - ELE OPELOGE (WEIGHTLIFTING, SAMOA)
MALE ATHLETE of the Year - RYAN PINI (SWIMMING, PAPUA NEW GUINEA)
TEAM of the Year - NEW CALEDONIA MEN'S HANDBALL
