EMON LODGE BASKETBALL LEAGUE GAME 14

AXE Proa keeps undefeated record

AXE Proa’s Gino Libuw pulls up for a shot against the Ol’Aces’ Trevor Ogumoro during the fourth quarter of their game in the Emon Lodge caging last Tuesday night at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium. (Roselyn B. Monroyo) AXE Proa is still unscathed in the Emon Lodge No. 179 Brotherhood Basketball League 2013/Docomo Pacific Cup, following a 65-54 victory over the Ol’Aces last Tuesday night at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

The win was the fourth in as many games for AXE Proa, which strengthened its hold of the top spot in the nine-team field, taking a two-game lead over three other squads that are tied for second place.

The loss was the second in three games for the Ol’Aces, who suffered another meltdown after going toe-to-toe with their foes majority of the match. The Ol’Aces, which went scoreless for about seven minutes in their 77-80 loss to Mariana Resort last Thursday, this time were without a field goal for more than three minutes in the final quarter and were held to 2 points in the last 5:45 of the match.

The Ol’Aces were looking good at the 54-50 tally past the halfway mark of the fourth period after Peter Camacho’s getaway drive from the right baseline and Junior Renguul’s pull-up jumper from the opposite side.

AXE Proa then sued for time and the short lull brought order back to the Rufino Aguon-coached team, as it went for the killer blows in the homestretch with a 15-2 windup. Dan Barcinas started the rally with an and-1 play from the right baseline and made the bonus shot to move AXE Proa within one. A reverse layup from Jack Lizama after another Ol’Aces miss put AXE Proa back into the driver’s seat, 55-54, and Aguon’s wards slowly put the game away with Ichitaro Faisao hitting back-to-back baskets and Lizama drilling a jumper. Gino Libuw also scored a string of 4 points to give AXE Proa a double-digit lead, 63-52, entering the final minute of the game.

An uncontested basket from Trevor Ogumoro with 55 seconds left on the clock ended the Ol’Aces’ drought, but this was not enough to bring the team back into the game, as Proa wisely used the time to keep its distance and take the double-digit winning margin.

Faisao top-scored for AXE Proa with his 14 points, while Lizama and Keoni Chariton added 13 and 11, respectively.

Peter Camacho had 12 points for the Ol’Aces, but he was held to one field goal in the last three quarters. The Ol’Aces forward sizzled early, firing 9 points in the opening canto to lift his team to an 18-14 advantage. Proa then moved within a hair at the break, 30-31, after earning several points from the foul line. The game remained close in the third period with Proa holding a shaking 44-41 lead and the Ol’Aces went on to keep their foes within striking distance in the first half of the final canto before fading down in the end.

The Ol’Aces took forced shots in an attempt to end the drought and were a bit rattled by AXE Proa’s pressure defense. The Ol’Aces failed to produce the much-needed baskets as they played without one of their offensive options—Jesus Iguel, who averaged 18 points in their first two games

AXE Proa 65 — Faisao 14, Lizama 13, Chariton 11, Barcinas 8, Alegre 6, Libuw 4, Dela Rosa 4, Johnson 3, Babauta 2.

Ol’Aces 54 — Camacho 12, Ogumoro 10, Basa 8, Litulumar 8, Renguul 8, Norita 6, Olaitiman 2.

Scoring by quarters: 14-18, 30-31, 44-41, 65-54.
