American Samoa returns from Samoa with 2 Championships

Team American Samoa consisting of 4 teams (Pago Eagles in the men's open, Ol' Skool in the women's open and U18 boys & girls teams) competed against team Samoa in their 2016 Independence day basketball tournament from May 30 - June 3. Ol' Skool & the U18 boys returned back home with championship trophies, Pago Eagles with 2nd place and U18 girls with 4th place.

TAH group visits American Samoa & conducts clinics

The American Samoa department of education’s physical education division brought a group of coaches to the territory for free clinics in wrestling, track & field and also included basketball. ASDOE-PE contacted ASBA President, Milton Taufa’asau, to help support this clinic by organizing athletes between the ages of 13 – 18 with an exception to 19 & 20 year olds.

Former American Samoa U19 national player and 2011 Oceania All Star, Talanoa Smith, returns home to American Samoa and participates in the 2013 Summer Youth clinic by the department of parks and recreations. Smith, who is entering his junior season, is expected to start this season for the bearcats is happy to be home and able to give back to the young athletes with the same opportunity he had.

2013 Summer Program underway

Basketball is featuring prominently in the Parks and Recreation summer clinics at Alofae, Maleaimi and Tafuna. Over 60 students are participating in these clinics, which concentrate on fundamental skills for the young players and more specialist training for the high school students.

The tryouts for the men's basketball team is under way. It began 3 weeks ago and there were over 30 trying out. The coaches are Milton Taufaasau and Diehl Langkilde assisted by Forest Duldalao and Mel Purcell who coached the Mini Games team in 1997 and was a player in 83' and 87'.

Oceania well represented at inaugural Youth Olympic Games

Host organisers have just completed the installation of the official competition basketball court ahead of the Youth Olympic Games that gets underway on 14th August in Singapore. This event marks the debut of FIBA 33, the official 3 on 3 version of basketball.

Oceania will be represented by Australia girls, Vanuatu girls and New Zealand men. Players are aged under 18 and coaches under 35.
