The 18U Oceania Championship at Paseo Stadium in Guam kicked off the second half of the preliminary phase on Monday. And it started with a surprise.

After losing the first three games the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianna Islands (CNMI) entered the win column by stunning New Zealand with a 4-2 victory. CNMI was led by Leroy Regis, who not only got the win on the mound, but also did most of the damage at the plate, driving in three of the four runs. Joe Boyce took the loss despite collecting eight strikeouts.

In the second game of the day Australia improved to 4-0 in the tournament thanks to a 3-1 win over host Guam. Josh Guyer tripled, doubled and scored twice. Mitchell Simon got five Ks en route to the win. Kaleb Cruz was charged with the loss.

On Tuesday Guam and New Zealand will meet for a key matchup for second place in the standings, while Australia takes on CNMI. The tournament serves as qualifier for the XXV IBAF 18U Baseball World Championship in Korea later this year.
