9th Oceania Outdoor Target Championships

For the first time there will be the Oceania Commonwealth Championships. While neither New Caledonia nor Tahiti will be eligible for this tournament, the vast majority of Oceania members will be.

As part of the international campaign to have archery included as a regular sport in the Commonwealth Games (CWG), World Archery has, through  its own CWG committee, encouraged each Continental Association to hold its own Commonwealth Championships.  Although details have not yet been finalised, it is hoped to have the winners of each Continental championship compete in a Commonwealth Finals tournament in 2013.

Details about accommodation will be made available shortly along with the preliminary entry form.

The reason for the lateness of the tournament is to avoid the Olympic Games at which at least three of our countries will be represented, and for members to recover financially from the costs of the Pacific Games.

By holding the Commonwealth Championships with the Oceania Championships and in New Zealand we hope more of our countries will be encouraged to compete. The two tournaments will be the opening event for the new stadium and there will be close co-operation and support from local schools where there will be an emphasis on learning about the nations of the Pacific.

Regretfully Oceania is not in a position to aid countries financially to travel to New Zealand or for accommodation but the organisers are working with local hotels, etc to get the best deals possible.

Access to Whitianga  is through flying into Auckland airport.  It may be possible to get a special rate for vehicles to drive to the Coromandel.  This will be advised shortly.

Please make every effort to send a team to the Oceania Championships, we look forward to seeing you there.
