Marianas High School's Joe Suarez legs out a fastbreak layup against Kagman High School during their varsity game in the MISO caging last Wednesday at the MHS Gymnasium. (Walter Cepeda Sutherland) Marianas High School swept Kagman High School, winning the freshmen, junior varsity, and varsity games in the 2012-2013 Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization Basketball League last Wednesday at the MHS Gymnasium.

The varsity match was played last with the Dolphins (2-0) overwhelming the Ayuyus (1-1), 93-77.

John Darag paced MHS in the opening 10 minutes of with his 10 points and helped his team post a 25-10 advantage.

Darag took a seat early in the second quarter, but Erick Dela Rosa and Joe Zapanta were there to keep MHS in control, as the duo hooked up for 11 markers. Darag then returned midway through the period and added 4 more to lift the Dolphins to a 44-25 halftime advantage.

Jason Lampkin scored 12 points for the Ayuyus to lead their offense, but Kagman needed some defensive stops to mount any type of comeback. That defense never came, as MHS only poured it on harder in the second half.

Dela Rosa, Lixing Dai, and Frank Macahito combined for 15 points in the third quarter for a daunting 68-45 lead, heading into the final period.

Surprisingly, Ohmar Nawaz splashed in four 3-pointers in Kagmann's last ditch effort for a comeback, but it merely made the final score look respectable, as the Ayuyus still gave up 25 points on the other end.

Dela Rosa paced MHS with his 17 points, while Darag added 15. Lampkin topped the box score with 28.

JUNIOR VARSITY

MHS 57, KHS 31

The Dolphins sprung out of the gates for a stout 13-2 lead and went straight for the jugular in the second quarter.

KHS (1-1) made improvements in the third quarter, but MHS (2-0) did not show any signs of slowing down and pressed on to a 48-28 separation, heading into the final canto.

Ano and Justin Cayading paced MHS with a couple buckets, while KHS laid down and was stipend to just three checks in the fourth quarter.

The MHS duo finished the game with 12 points apiece, while Evangelista matched their effort on the short end.

MHS 27, KHS 16

In the inaugural freshmen division match in the MISO caging, MHS snagged an early 8-2 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.

The Dolphins held KHS to one basket again in the second period and extended their advantage to 8 at halftime, 12-4. Mike Arciaga led a handful of scorers for MHS with his 4 points.

After being held to a bucket in the first half, Kagman's Mike Muna tried to get things going for the Ayuyus. However, his 4 markers were neutralized by MHS' Melvin Deocares, Kobe Mendoza, and Francis Rapadas, who stretched the lead to double digits, 19-9, heading into the final period.

The opposing teams then merely traded baskets in the end, allowing MHS to walk away with the 11-point win.
