Glen Douglas has been appointed as WYC's Junior Coaching Coordinator
Following an extensive (and a little drawn out) process, the Committee is happy to announce that Glen Douglas has been appointed as WYC’s Junior Coaching Coordinator / Head Coach.
Glen grew up around the club and started sailing in a Sparrow. From there he progressed to a 420, a 14 foot skiff and a Paper Tiger. While sailing in the Westernport Challenge at Somers, Glen was noticed by a national coach who encouraged Glen and Robbie Lovig into a Hobie 16. In 2001 the boys competed in the Hobie Youth World Championships in Europe and came 3rd. The next year in Noumea they took out the Hobie World Youth title. Since then Glenn has sailed in the Philliipine Challenge and sailed and coached in Hong Kong. With partner Anna Roach, Glen is now kept busy looking after baby Asha (14 months). Glen is actively working towards obtaining his instructor’s certification and while this is happening his activities will be overseen by our qualified instructors – Roger Crabtree, Marg Douglas and Colin Franke.
This is an important appointment for the club. Glen will be responsible for perpetuating the excellent junior coaching program established and run by Noel Gibson over the last several years.
Under Noel’s guidance we have seen many of our young members progress from Tackers graduate to competitive state and even national-level sailor. Noel also established an excellent coaching staff including Michelle Bursa, Caitlin Davies, Robbie Lovig and Rhys Mead. This is a great base for Glen to inherit and continue to evolve in line with the needs of our junior sailors.
The Committee trusts that all members will support Glen as you have supported Noel over the years and offer your support and advice to help Glen fulfil this critical role.
