Victoria’s best female school footballers will converge on Casey Fields on Friday, July 17 for a huge day of action as part of the Senior Girls Herald Sun Shield.
Eight schools will compete in across two divisions with the two best schools in the top division earning the opportunity to take to Etihad Stadium on Saturday August 1.
The round robin at Casey Fields will conclude with the Division 1 Consolation Final and the Division 2 Grand Final.
The Senior Girls Herald Sun Shield is now in its fourth year and continues to grow in prominence.
Instead of holding the Division 1 Grand Final at this year’s carnival, the two best teams will instead face off as a curtain raiser to the North Melbourne v Carlton clash on Saturday August 1.
AFL Victoria Participation and Programs Manager Stephen O’Donohue said the match at Etihad Stadium gave girls an amazing opportunity to take their talents to the big stage.
“Just like young boys who grow up with a sherrin in their hands, so many girls dream of one day playing at a stadium like Etihad and testing their ability against the best.”
“It’s so important that AFL Victoria provides opportunities like this for female footballers to ensure they make football their sport of choice and become long term participants.”
“Each year the standard of the competition has increased dramatically and I look forward to what will be a great game under the roof at one of the country’s premier sporting facilities.”
Ballarat Grammar School are the current reigning champions after powering to the title in 2014 and are again expected to be one of the schools to beat this year.
With the MCG unavailable this year, the Boys Herald Sun Shield Grand Final will take place at North Port Oval on Saturday August 8.
The Boys Herald Sun Country Shield Grand Final will be played at Rams Arena, Craigieburn this Wednesday, July 15.
