FOUR goals from Leevan Dutta helped the national men's side thrash Papua New Guinea 7-0 in their first match of the FIH (International Hockey Federation) World League Round 1 and Oceania Pacific Cup yesterday.
The result means Fiji is on track to qualify for the second round of the world league that will be held in India next year.
To cement their position, Fiji will need to beat Vanuatu on Wednesday at the National Hockey Centre in Laucala Bay, Suva.
However, in the OPC competition Fiji meets the New Zealand Maori side at 3pm today.
National coach Hector Smith said he was happy with the win but admitted PNG exposed some of their weaknesses.
He said they would need to rectify their weaknesses and minimise their mistakes against the NZ Maori side as they are aiming to win their first ever OPC title since its introduction in 2008.
"The main aim is to qualify for the second round of the world league and today (yesterday) we overcame our first obstacle (PNG)," the former national rep said.
"So now that only one obstacle remains (Vanuatu) since Samoa has pulled out, we will need to use the OPC games as a build-up to that match against Vanuatu," he said.
Dutta echoed similar sentiments saying he is not really concentrating on becoming the top goal scorer in the competition.
"I love scoring goals but it's the team achievement that is more important and that is to qualify for the second round of the world league," the 20-year-old said.
"If I do happen to become the top goal scorer then that would just be a bonus," he said.
The other goals were scored by Alsace Smith (2) and Adrian Smith.
The national women's side also tasted success in their first match as they demolished Vanuatu 17-1.
