Leicester Sparks

Wolves knew
that a win against Leicester Sparks could see them open up a 5 point lead at the top of the table with their closest rivals Derby not playing this weekend. Earlier in the season Wolves had beaten Sparks in Leicester before an administrative error by Sparks resulted in the EBL awarding the game to Wolves as 20-0.

A confident Worcester Wolves won the tip-off but it was Sparks who opened the scoring with a long range 3point basket. Dave Nash scoring the first points for Wolves from the charity stripe before Sparks extended the lead. With 5 minutes played Coach Sarwar called an early time-out with Wolves trailing 7-4 and only Nash on the scoresheet for the home side. On the re-start a neat post move by Sam Broughton gave him 2 points and reduced the gap to a single point. Sparks then scored 2 before a long range effort from Dylan Richardson tied the game at 9-9 with six minutes played. The final 4 minutes of the quarter belonged to Wolves, a 9-3 run, including a 3 point basket from Curtis Pearson, gave Wolves an 18-12 interval lead.

With Jamie Summers now on court for Dylan Richardson Wolves took control and with Summers hitting Wolves third 3 pointer of the day the lead had extended to 23-14. A fightback from Sparks in a hectic three minutes tied the game at 23-23. Coach Sarwar made changes and with tough defence from Tom Cox and Dave Nash coupled with the offensive threat of Ash Dickson, Summers and Richardson Wolves went on a 9-0 run in just over 60 seconds and with shattered any hopes Sparks had of taking something from the game. The half time ending with 2 point baskets from Sparks either side of another Richardson 3 point basket. Half Time Wolves led 35-27

A close third quarter saw Broughton pick up 10 points as his height and strength was the undoing of a spirited Sparks performance. Only Kirk for Sparks showing any real fight as he scored 9 of the Sparks 16 points in a quarter dominated by free throws. End of quarter 3 Wolves leading by 10 at 53-43.

The opening minutes of the final quarter found Dickson in space as he hit two long range 3 point baskets following some neat passing by the home team to create space. Dickson was then fouled as he attempted his hat-trick of threes, scoring one from three but opening up a 17 point advantage. Nash, Mike Arlott and Pearson then added to the score before Broughton finished off the scoring for the home side as Wolves won comfortably by 24 points. The final score Wolves 76 Sparks 52. This was another impressive team performance befitting a team with an 86% winning record, having scored over 300 points more than their opponents and still enjoying their best ever season in the National League.

Wolves remain top of the Midland Conference table with an impressive 12-2 record. On Saturday 9th February Wolves travel away to Bournville Bears, tip-off 2:30pm

Wolves Top Scorers: Sam Broughton 20 points, Dylan Richardson 12 points and Curtis Pearson 11 points
