UK Sport Scraps British Basketball Funding

Following the recent announcement that UK Sport has withdrawn all funding for British Basketball a campaign committee has been set up. Below is an email we have received that details the problem, the committees aims and importantly what you can do to help. The decision to withdraw the funding will impact you (as a player, a parent or supporter), please take a few minutes to read the email below and if possible sign the petition. With your support the campaign will have a louder voice and with that we will make people listen. A copy of the actual press release is included at the foot of this news item.

I hope all is well with you and that your season is going well. I'm contacting you all in unfortunate circumstances and in hope of your support.

I am sure most of you will have heard but if you are not yet aware; British Basketball has recently had its funding cut to zero by UK Sport and the sport here in the UK faces a drastic downhill spiral in a time where clear improvements and developments are being made. It is a particularly difficult time due to the restructuring of our National Teams programme with FIBA and the future of British Basketball is now under serious threat after having our main source of income removed.

This decision has caused uproar in our basketball community and as you would expect but now it is time for action. We have tried to put a number of things in place to change the current decision.

  • One of the things we need to help our cause is for as many people as possible to sign our online petition. It only takes a minute or so, followed up by clicking on a link in a confirmation email and your support would be gratefully received. Please follow the link below to support our campaign:

We ask that everyone that signs then tries to get a further 10 friends and family to do the same, this way the petition will grow quickly and truly demonstrate the support for British Basketball in this country. If you can pass this message onto all of your members it would be a big help in pushing this forward.

  • Another thing we ask is that any of you (or people within you club) who are big Twitter users, please include #fundbritishbasketball in any tweets about the subject.
  • Finally, for those clubs with a website. I have attached the press release along with a number of photos that have been published today from Sam Neter, We ask that, where possible, you post this as the latest news story on your site to try and drive more people to sign the petition.

If you require any more information on the campaign or what else you can do to help feel free to get in touch (welcome to contact me on the details below alternatively contact Sam Neter, and I will respond as soon as possible.

Thanks for your support in advance, let’s hope we can all do enough to help reverse this decision and allow basketball to continue to build here in the UK.

Comment Guidelines: The SportsTG Network is made up of players, families and passionate sports followers like you who have a strong opinion about sport. That's great - we want you to have your say and share your thoughts with the world. However, we have a few rules that you must follow to keep it fun for all. Please don't be rude, abusive, swear or vilify others. Apart from some pretty serious sport sanctions, we also can ban you and report you if things get out of hand. So play fair and have fun, and thanks for your contribution.
