First games of the year 2013

North West Region Ladies League

 Donegal Town B.C.      65    Kilcar B.C.    40

Donegal Town B.C. hosted Kilcar B.C for 2 great games at the weekend. In the first of the New Year these 2 teams gave us a real battle. The first quarter was probably the best of them as both sides had some lovely scores. Orla Carr had 8pts for Kilcar and along with Captain Sinead Mc Brearty 5pts really brought the game to the Donegal Town girls. Tara Khan and Julianne Murphy kept the home team in it and a basket from Ruta Balezentyte was the difference at the end of the first 16-15 to Donegal. The 2nd quarter was more of the same with both teams missing good chances to go in front. Aishling Cunningham had 6pts and was dominating her own boards and again we had a close quarter until the last seconds where Julianne Murphy had a great buzzer beater 3 pointer to give her side the edge in the quarter 17-12. Half time was 33-27 and all to play for. Donegal Town came out fired up for the 3rd and with Kelly Harron and Michaela Breslin going very well Maeve Liston and Tara Khan hit the high notes and gave the home team a great lead winning the quarter 23-7 and a lovely 3 pointer from Balezentyte rounded off the quarter. The last was a low scoring affair as Kilcar tightened up their ‘D’ and the last was won 9-6 to Donegal for a 65-40 win. Offensively Kilcar best player was Orla Carr while they had a great performance by Aishling Cunningham under the boards. Donegal can thank their usual stars Tara Khan and Julianne Murphy but the input from their youngsters was huge and Maeve Liston, Ruta Balezentyte, Kelly Harron and Michaela Breslin all had great games MVP Julianne Murphy. The ladies play Ballyshannon at home next Saturday 6.30pm tip off.

North West Region Men’s League

Donegal Dragons      75     Kilcar B.C.         58

The 2nd game of the evening was again very entertaining with fabulous scores from both teams. Kilcar showed their intentions with 2 3point scores from Glen Mc Brearty to start of the game with a bang. The Dragons hit back with Veteran John Kennedy 6pts leading the way Ryan Malley also drove to the basket and somehow managed to score with a couple of delightful baskets. Duignan was dominant on the boards for the home team which gave the Dragons a great platform and went in 22-11 up at the end of the first. A similar 22-10 score line left the home side up 43-21. Kilcar rallied and with the Hugh Breslin, Michael Brennan and the lighting fast Eoin Mc Hugh brought the game to Donegal winning the third 17-14. Both sides threw everything into the last and again we were treated to some great basketball and wonderful scores from both sides. Dillon Muldoon’s low post play was wonderful as he switched from side to side but young Zak Balogun was leading the rebounds stats with a great display under his own basket and along with Captain Jordan Carty led the team home despite the great challenge from the Kilcar lads. Best for Kilcar were Hugh Molloy and Eoin Mc Hugh while Biz Zak, Jason Duignan and Dillon Muldoon gave the base needed to win while Leo Mc Hugh, John Kennedy, Ryan Malley and the returning Gareth Britton were excellent. MVP Dillon Muldoon.
