Referees Guidelines - Guarding a Player witout the ball

1.   Understand that all players are entitled to a position on the floor that no one else has illegal contact may be the responsibility of the offence just as much as the defence.

2.   Understand what players are attemptingto achieve by closely guarding players without the ball. i.e. impede their progress, prevent them from receiving a pass.

3.   Quickly establish if the defence is legal. i.e. the elements of time and distance have been adhered to.

4.   Remember as an easy rule of thumb, the minimum distance is one step and the maximum is two steps.

5.   See the whole play from the beginning, with as wide an angle as possible. The closer to the action, the more difficult it is to judge.

6.   Be aware of defenders trying to jump into the path of a moving opponent.

7.   Most contact situations on players without the ball occur when

        a)  the offensive player is making a lead to the ball. Both offensive and defensive contact.

        b) the offensive player is attempting to make a cut and they are held or pushed, or the defensive players uses an illegal arm bar.

        c) When the offensive player is picked off by a defender as they are cutting to the ball.

        d) When the offensive player is pushed, held or blocked from being able to make an on ball screen.

8.   Common screens are back screens - where the screener must allow at least one step distance for the player to stop or change direction.

9.   Be aware of players forcing their way through a screen.
