GUIDELINES FOR CALLING 24 SECOND VIOLATIONS

1.   Remember the ball must be released from the shooters hand before device sounds.

2.   If the ball has left the shooter's hands and the 24 second device sounds while the ball is in the air and it enters the basket, the points shall count.

3.   If the ball has left the shooter's hands and the 24 second device sounds while the ball is in the air and the ball hits the ring (but does not go in) there is no violation.

4.   If the ball has left the shooter's hands and the 24 second device sounds while the ball is in the air and the ball hits the backboard or misses the ring a violation has occured. The violation may be disregarded if the opponents have gained       immediate and clear control.

5.   Be aware of the device going off in error - Stop the clock immediately, you are aware of the error by blowing the whistle and then make the correction.

Corrections will either be:

        a) Reset in error, establish the correct time left and rest

        b) Signal sounded in error with one team clearly in possessions, reset the clock and award that team possession.

        c) Signal sounded in error withno team in possession - jump ball situation.

6.   Be very aware of the amount of time left on the shot clock, by glancing up to look at the clock at regular times.

7.   When bringing the ball back into play after a stoppage, check the clock and verbally indicate the time remaining for both your benefit and the player's benefit.

8.   If there is an element of doubt reward the defensive team and call the 24 second violation.
