Referres Guidelines - Handchecking

1.   Handchecking is where the defensive player uses their hand(s) to contact an opponent to either impede their progress or to assist the defensive player in guarding his opponent.

2.   Handchecking is not allowed on the ball handler.

3.   It is a foul if :

        a)  A defender leaves their hand on after a warning by the referee

        b)  A defender continually places their hand(s) on

        c)  A defender places two hands on

        d)  A defender continually jabs at the player

        e)  An illegal arm bar is used by the defender (i.e. the arm is extended outside the defenders normal cylinder).

4.   Handchecking can often lead to a loss of a game control if allowed to persist.

5.   Call illegal handchecking early in the game to help establish a pattern of what is and what is not acceptable.

6.   Illegal handchecking can be the responsibility of the offence just as much as the defence.

7.   Most handchecking occurs:

       a)  At the beginning of the game where defenders are aggresively playing defence.

       b)  When players are getting tired and atempt to use their hands to maintain good defensive positions.

       c)  When players mismatch with a defender trying to guard a quicker offensive player.

       d)  In isolated one on one situations, where the offensive player beats their defender.

       e)  On drives to the basket.
