Referees Guidelines - Verticality

1.   Each player has the right to a position from the floor to the ceiling. Consider each player to be a cylinder determined by the width of their body.

2.   Determine if the defender has legal guarding position.

3.   Focus on the defender, but observe the offence as a secondary focus.

4.   Adjudicate which cylinder, either body or arm has encroached on the other.

5.   If both cylinders are legal, a no call is the best call. Don't penalise the defence unjustly.

6.   In rebound situations, wait an extra second just to see if the players involved have "cleaned off" each other. However, do not allow players from behind to infringe on the vertical space of the player in front.

7.   Athletic players are capable of jumping from unusual positions to block a shot or rebound a ball, without making illegal contact. Therefore:

      *  Try not to anticipate the call

      *  Observe the whole play

      *  It is better to be late on the call than to make a call applying the principle of verticality incorrectly.

8.   Most verticality situations occur

      * On a pull up jump shot

      * After an offensive rebound is gathered and a further shot is attempted.
