Referees Guidelines - One on One Situations

GUIDELINES FOR ONE ON ONE SITUATION

1.   See the whole play from the beginning.

2.   Determine if the defender has established a legal guarding position (feet, first, facing).

3.   Allow the defender to adjust laterally or backwards.

4.   Establish who initiates the contact.

5.   Establish where is the point of contact. If down the torso, the defender has usually got to the position first.

6.   Don't penalise the defence unjustly. Just because there is some contact, do not fall into the trap of calling a foul on the defence. Many times the best call is a no call.

7.   Do not penalise the defence if they keep their arms tight against the body and do not go outside their own cylinder.

8.   Most one on one moves occur

        a) When a player becomes isolated with their team mates clearing out to give them the opportunity to "go to work"on their defender.

        b) In a wing to baseline drive to the basket.
