Kevin Smith has informed the Northern Football League he will not continue as umpiring director in 2015.
After completing his 50th consecutive year in football, Smith has decided the time is right to draw an end to a sensational career that began in 1965 as an umpire in the Preston and District Junior Football League.
NFL chief executive Peter McDougall commended Smith on his tremendous service to football and the Northern Football League, who he joined at the conclusion of the 2007 season.
“On behalf of the entire NFL community, I thank Kevin for his outstanding contribution to the league over the past eight years,” McDougall said.
“The NFL was looking for an experienced person to restructure the umpiring department when Kevin joined.
“Under his stewardship, the NFL’s umpire numbers have now reached a record high, with more than 150 umpires in attendance at training each Wednesday night.”
Smith’s achievements include umpiring 303 VFL games between 1971 to 1985, including 23 finals and four grand finals in 1975, 1976, 1979 and 1983.
A fortnight ago he was announced the winner of the 2014 AFL Merit Award, recognising his extraordinary contribution to football.
Smith has also been awarded life membership with both the AFL and AFL Umpires Association, and received induction into the AFL Umpires Association Hall of Fame.
This week NFL umpire Jack Edwards was added to the AFL field umpire list for the 2015 season. Another of Smith’s protégé Lucinda Lopes became the first female field umpire to be selected onto the VFL’s umpires list this season.
The Northern Football League thanks Kevin Smith for his tremendous contribution to the league and wishes him well in retirement.
The league will soon begin the process of finding a replacement for the umpiring director position.

It is with great pleasure that the Northern Umpires Association extend our congratulations to our very own Lucinda Lopes, who has become the very first female to reach the Victorian Football League level as a field umpire!
The announcement was made at VFL training on Tuesday night, and I think it's fair to say that all of us would like to take just a little bit of credit for Lucy's development.
Lucinda has been umpiring with us for over 10 years, starting as strictly a junior field umpire at a very young age, and having progressed steadily through the ranks to become an 'A' Grade regular in the field throughout the past 3 seasons.
We have no doubt that this is only one step in Lucinda's incredible journey, and we would like to wish you all the best for season 2014 and into the future!

A huge thank you to all who came out to Casa D'Abruzzo for the 2013 Northern Umpires Association's Senior Presentation Night on Friday, October 5th.
In a more streamlined setting, we saw presentations kept to a minimum and the time and space for socialising, and indeed dancing, was the result. Particular thanks also go out to The Simon Wright Band for keeping us entertained for the night!

As part of it's off-season activities, the NUA Exec recently updated and endorsed the NUA Code of Conduct.
A copy of the Code can be located under our Forms & Resources Section.
Equally important to be aware of, particularly with Article 1 of the NUA Code of Conduct is the NFL Social Media Policy. This is the policy that all umpires are required to adhere to as NFL Employees and the policy is endorsed by the NUA Executive.
A copy of the NFL Social Media Policy can also be found under our Forms & Rescources Section.
