Tackling Global Poverty with the Olympic Spirit: Our Inaugural Townsville One Just World Forum

One Just World is coming to Townsville! We are launching our regional series in Townsville with Tackling Global Poverty with the Olympic Spirit on Thursday 19 July 2012 at 6.00 – 7.30pm (entry from 5.30pm). This is a FREE forum open to everyone.

We would be delighted to invite the staff, volunteers and members of your football (soccer) club to our forum, as well as any friends and family would be interested in joining us for a dynamic discussion. Included on the panel are two eminent former sports people: former Australian Wallaby
Peter Horton, and former international soccer player for Cameroon, Cyrille Ndongo-Keller.

One Just World is a national series of free Q & A style speakers’ forums aimed at involving the community in conversation and debate on key issues facing Australia, the Asia Pacific and beyond.

The Olympic spirit is about building a peaceful and better world with mutual understanding, a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play. The most important part of the Olympic Games is not necessarily to win, but to do one’s best while taking part.

Billions of people around the world, through no fault of their own, struggle and every day is a test of wills, a test of survival with limited access to water, healthcare and education. What if sport was a way in which we could turn this around?

Sport is a major part of the lives of many Australians. It brings people together to work towards common goals and promote the core values necessary for lasting change. On the sporting field, everyone is equal. Sport unites and fans the flames of a community, and it’s in this spirit that people, working together, can really start to make a difference.

But is the thought of sport instigating meaningful social change completely absurd? Can we really use sport to help those in need? And if women and men’s sport are unequally resourced in the developed world, how can the benefits of sport be accessed by both genders? In the spirit of the Olympics, can sport lift billions out of poverty and help to change the world for the better?

Comment Guidelines: The SportsTG Network is made up of players, families and passionate sports followers like you who have a strong opinion about sport. That's great - we want you to have your say and share your thoughts with the world. However, we have a few rules that you must follow to keep it fun for all. Please don't be rude, abusive, swear or vilify others. Apart from some pretty serious sport sanctions, we also can ban you and report you if things get out of hand. So play fair and have fun, and thanks for your contribution.
