This weekend marks a historical event in AFL Ontario, with Toronto Rebels stalwart Nik "Paps" Papaioannou playing his 250th Game! Only once before has such a milestone been met in Australian Football in Ontario.
OAFL president Marty Walter said this on the achievement.
"I must say this is a incredible and rare achievement. This type of milestone is very rarely reached in Australia where the game has been played fo more than 150 years and such an achievement has only ever been reached once before here in Canada," he said. "It is a sign of his true dedication to the development of the sport here in Ontario but more than that it is a statement of Pap's obvious passion and love for the game."
Paps began his career with the Rebels in the 1992 season, and has gone on to play at least nine games per year, every year since. A solid all-round footballer, Paps is known for his hardness at the footy and rarely comes off second best from a solid bump or contest. In the 20+ seasons Paps has played, he seen the highs and lows of football, winning and losing premierships, but always comes back for more and never, ever gives in.
On the field Paps has both Captained and Coached the Toronto Rebels. Off the field he has been Club President and has been one of the catalysts for the Rebels being well known for having the best social atmosphere. The Rebels are proud to call Paps their own, and intend on doing him proud not only this weekend, but for the rest of the season.
