Every Rain Cloud Has a Silver Lining

The old adage is that if you want to break the drought, host a Touch Football event. It is safe to say that Port Macquarie has kept this theory alive at the 2013 NSW Junior State Cup, with teams beginning the tournament with a cool summer shower.

While the rain has created a mild inconvenience for some, namely the event organisers, groundsmen and a host of uniform-washing managers and parents, the slick surface has presented an attacking middle’s paradise and 10-year-old’s playground.

We caught up with some of the boys from the Nelson Bay Under 12’s, who were taking advantage of the exceptionally large puddle behind the referee’s tent.

Have you been having fun playing in the mud?

“Yes! This is awesome.”

Are you having more fun playing Touch Football or playing in the mud?

“Probably both, yeah both"

Who has done the biggest slide so far?

“Me!” “Yea Angus.”

Do you want the rain to stay or to go away?

“I want it to keep raining, I love it.”

We also managed to catch up with Bruce, who was the father of two of the boys in the team.

What have you thought of the weather so far?

“Shocking, miserable, wet, muddy, but we are all having fun, having a ball.”

Who is doing the washing in your team?

“We are all taking our own home and washing them, probably in the shower, and then we have to bring them back in the morning.”

What do you think are the chances of getting them clean for tomorrow?
