Devils Claim Title In First Year
The Wollongong Devils have won the 2012 New South Wales State Cup Men’s Open final, defeating the Hornsby Lions by two touchdowns.
The Devils, who are in their first year in the Men’s Open Championship division after several years in the second division, were impressive in the final, taking the match 5-3.
The game was fast paced from the outset, with a dummy and dive from the Devils’ Joel Willoughby in the opening set resulting in the game’s first touchdown.
Hornsby were quick to hit back, when a Dylan Hennessey long ball found winger Michael Abood in the next set to level the game up at 1-all.
Willoughby’s second touchdown, not too dissimilar to his first, saw the Devils reclaim the lead shortly after but when Charbel Maroun stepped around his defender off a Hennessey ball the game was again levelled up.
Two of the Devils’ young guns, Luke Tonegato and Adam Clune, combined for the side’s next touchdown, with a well-timed ball from Clune finding Tonegato at the midway mark of the game to take a one touchdown advantage, 3-2.
The Devils extended their lead to two touchdowns when Terry Deegan scored but Hornsby were once again quick to hit back, with Put Berryman scoring with five minutes remaining.
Mitch Tope put his side ahead by two touchdowns with four minutes left in the game after combining with his brother Matt to score to take a 5-3 lead, with Hornsby unable to retaliate, with the Devils taking their first Men’s Open State Cup title.
