In memory of Meri Kreig - 23 September, 8:29 AM -Elle White

Kia ora koutou

It is with sadness that I bring to you heart-breaking news of Meri Kreig. In the early hours of Friday morning (20/09/13), our colleague and friend passed away in Wellington Hospital.

Meri has left an enduring mark on this world that will be remembered by all who knew her. Meri was the true definition of mana wahine, a Maori woman who led with strength, character, integrity and wisdom.

She worked tirelessly for her family, friends and communities, often at the expense of her own health and well-being. Right to the end Meri served others, and it is this sense of community and desire to look after and care for others that makes her the special person she was and is.

This will come as a shock and surprise to many of you, so please look to each other for support during this time of sadness and remember her fondly. She loved all the many friendships she grew over the years and especially those formed in ACC.

She wanted you all to know that you brought joy to her world and hopes that she was able to do the same in some small way. The powerful and forthright woman that you knew was the same person that left this world.

If I was to shed a tear, I can almost feel her finger point, with an intensely sharp look, and a commanding, “STOP THAT CHILD!!!”. Behind that gruff façade was this beautiful smile and genuine love.

So I’ll remember her as a woman of contradictions, she was as weak as she was tough, she was gentle as she was abrasive, she was scared as she was brave, she was peaceful as she was brutal. She was our friend.

E te kuru pounamu, kua whati te manawa, kua tangi te wairua mo to wehenga atu. Waiho mai te mamae o tenei Ao, e tatari ana ratou mou, e karanga ana ratou mou ki to ratou taha. Kia pai to haere e Whaea!

Oh great treasured one, our hearts have broken, our spirits weep for your passing. Leave the pain of this world and join your ancestors on the other side of the veil, they await you and call you to their side. May your journey be safe Mother!

REST IN PEACE MY FRIEND – FROM ALL YOUR FRIENDS IN NETBALL
