Whistle - Umpiring

Are you interested in making some money umpiring at our Twilight Netball Competition?

We are very keen to hear from any senior, junior and amateur level umpires - you do not need to have any prior experience however it would help to know the netball rules and be able to deliver a sound blow on a whistle to control a game!  This may be a way to build a little more confidence as a player umpire or junior umpire wishing to get better and also appeals to those senior umpires who wish to get in a little more practical experience and keep active in the off-season.  You may already be playing in a team and wish to earn some money while at the courts in which case we can try to work around your playing schedule.

There are two competitions to suit a range of umpiring abilities...

Womens' & Mixed grades held at 2 locations on three different nights a week:

  • Monday nights - up to 4 rounds starting at 6.00pm and last round finishes 10.00pm held outdoors at Hataitai Park, 43 Ruahine Street, Hataitai
  • Wednesday & Thursday nights - up to 4 rounds starting at 6.00pm and last round finishes 10.00pm held at the indoor ASB Sports Centre, 72 Kemp Street, Kilbirnie

Kids' Netball Comp for Years 3 - 8

  • Wednesday nights - maximum of 3 rounds starting at 4pm and last round ends at 6pm held at the indoor ASB Sports Centre, 72 Kemp Street, Kilbirnie

When does the competition start?

Monday night competition starts on 30th January 2012

Wednesday night competition starts on 8th February 2012

Thursday night competition starts on 9th February 2012

Kids' Netball Comp starts on Wednesday 15th February 2012

What do you need to wear?

There is no need to wear a uniform or official umpiring shirt & skirt/shorts as such - tidy neutral colours (white/black/navy blue) and comfy shoes will do just fine.  Don't forget your whistle and hair tye/rubber band to keep track of the centre pass but if you forget we will have spare whistles on hand for you to use and return.

What if I'm already planning to play in the competition?

No worries at all... we can work with you to arrange umpiring times that do not clash with your games and it may make the trip to the courts a little more beneficial making some money in the process.

How much could you earn?

If wishing to umpire in our Kids' Netball Comp, as the games are shorter (4 x 8 minute quarters), umpires shall receive $8.00 per game or if keen to sign-up to umpire all three games on Wednesdays you can receive a bonus $30.00 rate!

If wishing to umpire in our Twilight Netball League, games are 4 x 10 minute quarters) and pay rates are scaled according to your qualification. $10.00 per game for those without any formal qualification, $11.00 per game for those with Elementary level qualification and $12.00 for those with Centre level qualification or higher. Umpires who commit to umpiring 3 rounds on any given week also receive a bonus payment of $5.00 and those who are eager to help out with all 4 rounds receive a $10.00 bonus!

What if I find I rather enjoy the view from the other side and would like to learn more?

We are always happy to welcome new umpires at our Centre and if you let us know that you are keen to further develop your confidence and skills and learn more we can certainly give you more information about further umpiring opportunites and how to work your way onto the Kiwi Whistlers/Elementary umpire badge pathway and put you in touch with senior umpires who can support your interests.
