Young Central Zone taIent out to impress NZSS coaches

January 29, 2016

The cream of Netball Central’s rising young talent will be hoping to secure selection in the New Zealand Secondary Schools (NZSS) trials following a rigorous identification process held throughout the Zone.

A series of cluster sessions for secondary school players, with most coming from Year 10 to Year 12, held last year in Wellington, Hawke’s Bay, Taranaki and Palmerston North identified 49 as the best of the best from across the Zone.

Invited to attend a training camp on January 24, this group was trimmed to 31 and will now have the opportunity to press for a spot in the NZSS trials. They will attend a two-day camp in Otaki on February 13-14 in front of NZSS coaches Julie Seymour and Mary-Jane Araroa ahead of final selections, from across the country, for the trials.

"This has been an extensive process but we’re delighted with the calibre of players we had at the camp,’’ Netball Central Zone’s Emerging Talent Manager, Frances Solia said. ``There is strong talent in this area across the Zone and we’re hoping they give a good account of themselves in front of the NZSS coaches.’’

Eight identified umpires from the Zone have also been selected to attend the February camp with a view to extending their progression.

Linda Liggins, representing the New Zealand Umpires Development Group, is delighted with the progress being made by umpires across the Zone.

"All these umpires are at a good level and ready to move forward,’’ she said.  "These are umpires that are on the pathway with some heading from Zone level to New Zealand level and who are now ready for some extension and they have been identified as having that ability to develop further along that pathway.’’

Umpires chosen for the February 13-14 camp:
Shontae Broughton-Malcolm (Taranaki), Araana Te Arikitama (Taranaki), Breya Boulton (Taranaki), Daisy Smith (Hutt Valley), Kimberley Lake (Kapi-Mana), Natalie Corbett (Hawke’s Bay), Stacey Cook (Manawatu), Ethan Tuhua (Manawatu).
