2017 Super League Wrap
The 2017 Super League Finals night was played in wet, yet hot conditions. With early rain during the day, the grounds were perfect for some low-diving touchdowns. There were families, friends and players from the first whistle with Semi Finals commencing at 6pm.
The night started off with the Women’s Semi Finals with last year’s champions, Canberra City Bears taking on Gungahlin Cats and Tuggeranong Vikings going head to head against Woden Eagles. Both Bears and Vikings showed their dominance against their opposition with two big scores.
The Men’s Semi-Finals was a battle with Woden playing against Vikings and reigning champions Northern Phoenix taking on City Bears. Vikings were heavy favorites heading into the Semi-Final, however just scrapping in the final with a 6-4 win over Eagles. Phoenix demonstrated why they have lost a game all year with a large winning margin against Bears.
The twilight Grand Final was a deserving backdrop for the Women’s Grand Final between Bears and Vikings. This final lived up to expectations. The final was played fast, hard and loud! The talk between the girls in attack and defense was incredible. Vikings took a 1 touchdown lead for majority of the gain and snuck in one more touchdown. In the last 5 minutes, it was a try for try with City Bears pushing a late surge. However, Vikings were the winners in the end with a strong team performance winning 6-3.
In the Men’s final, there was not a space to stand around field. Not one person had left, everyone knew this was going to be the game of the night. Phoenix were slow off the mark in the first 10 minutes, with Vikings ahead by 2. Just before half time, the entertainers, the reigning champions, Phoenix put on two quick touchdowns to close the margin and go into half time with confidence. The second half was the best touch performance seen all year from both teams. Phoenix pushed through and scored several touchdowns to even the score out.
