Vikings Claim Women’s Super League Victory

The Tuggeranong Vikings have come from behind to claim the 2012 ACT Super League Women’s Open title, defeating the Canberra City Bears 8-5.

The Vikings trailed at half-time by one touchdown but five second half touchdowns to one saw them take away the win by three touchdowns.

The Bears were on the scoreboard early, when Kelly Goodwin made a break down the far side of the field to score the first touchdown on the match in the third minute.

The Vikings hit back one minute later, when Erin Brighetti found space to level the game up before the Vikings took the lead at the fifth minute mark, when Kristy Giteau scored from a Kasey Dragisic acting half run.

The Bears levelled the match up at 2-all at the midway mark of the first half when Ashley Kara made a great run from acting half to set up Zoe Terry before Rebecca Beath scored to reclaim the lead for the Vikings.

The last seven minutes of the half were all the Bears however, with Nikki Stanley and Alice Gervink scoring to give their side a 4-3 lead at half-time.

The Vikings were quick to make up for lost time in the second half, levelling the game up at 4-all two minutes into the half with Jacinta Williams scoring.

The Vikings reclaimed the lead in the sixth minute, when an acting half run from Beath saw the Tuggeranong side score on the wing and by the midway mark in the second half the Vikings had scored their third when Giteau scored in the corner.

When Giteau scored her third touchdown in the 12th minute the Vikings had a three touchdown lead, before Laura Elliot bridged the gap back to two touchdowns when she scored for the Bears. The Vikings ensured the win with three minutes remaining to claim the Women’s title by three touchdowns, 8-5.
